Global demand for nuclear medicine isotopes keeps rising
Femto Isotope strengthens reliable supply chain
The market for nuclear medicine is growing rapidly, and a secure, uninterrupted and reliable supply chain has become an essential component to meet the needs of patients worldwide. Vulnerabilities in this supply chain remain one of the greatest risks to ensuring timely and reliable access to treatment.
In recent years, Femto Isotope (based in Berlin, Germany) has launched an initiative to help transform the Egypt Test and Research Reactor Number Two (ETRR-2, located in Cairo, Egypt) and its nuclear facilities into a new global irradiation supplier. The ETRR-2 has unique capabilities that enable the production of vital medical isotopes for worldwide distribution. The facility already has a long track record of producing isotopes for domestic use, including Mo-99, Tc-99m, I-131, I-125, and Ir-192. The new portfolio will expand to include Lu-177 and Tb-161. It is impressive to see how Dr. Yasser Tawfik Selim, the head of complex of the ETRR-2, has transformed the organization to achieve this milestone.
This initiative has been strongly supported by the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA), ensuring the highest standards of safety, compliance, and alignment with Egypt’s national ambitions. We are grateful for the leadership and involvement of Dr. Amr El-Hag Ali, Chairman of the EAEA.
A central part of this initiative is the introduction of a transparent operating schedule. Beginning in 2026, the ETRR-2 reactor will operate on a commercial schedule of more than 250 full-power days per year, ensuring consistent, scalable, and reliable isotope production.
Femto Isotope is responsible for marketing and distributing these isotopes to healthcare providers and research institutions worldwide. Building on the leadership of Khaled Attia and Walied Hassan, Vinod Ramnandanlal now joins the executive team to further strengthen Femto Isotope with a dedicated focus on business development and sales. This addition reflects Femto’s commitment to expanding its commercial reach and enhancing customer engagement worldwide.
